Computer Vision Syndrome and Dry-Eye Floaters

Many occupations require frequent computer use, and students spend countless hours researching and writing from their computers. This constant use can lead to eye issues, such as computer vision syndrome.
  1. Computer Vision Syndrome

    • Computer vision syndrome stems from eye strain during computer use. The eyes must constantly adjust to adapt to various levels of contrast, and this may lead to irritated eyes, blurred vision, or double vision.

    Dry Eyes

    • When the surface of the eye is dry, the eye will feel irritated or scratchy and may water excessively. Vision is frequently blurred. Dry-eye floaters may appear as a film that moves across the eye, but dissipates after blinking.

    Diagnosis & Treatment

    • Contact an eye care professional with any eye discomfort or vision changes, and be sure to mention computer use. The doctor will examine both eyes, and if computer vision syndrome or dry eye is the cause, he will recommend using artificial tears. Computer glasses, which help you see optimally at intermediate distances, may also be prescribed to help with vision and eye fatigue.

    Prevention

    • When focused on a computer screen, eyes do not blink as frequently. Close your eyes periodically, and use artificial tears at the first sign of irritation or dryness.

    Warning

    • Not all floaters are caused by dry eyes. Black floaters that do not disappear may be a sign of damage to the back of the eye. Contact an eye doctor immediately with any vision problems to ensure eye health.
