How to Polish Optical Glass

Princeton University defines optical glass as a "clear homogeneous glass of known refractive index" and eyeglass lenses, telescopes and binoculars are commonly made out of it. Those who wear eyeglasses know all too well that the glasses can easily get smudged, dirty or foggy. To keep your eyeglasses crystal clear, they should be cleaned and polished at least once a week to help you see better.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe you glasses with a lint-free soft cloth. This will help remove any dust or dirt from the optical glass. Never use a harsh cloth, sponge, tissue paper or paper towel to clean or dry your glasses; those materials can scratch and may have moisturizer.

    • 2

Fill a small bowl with mild anti-bacterial soap and warm water. Swish the water around until it is very soapy.

    • 3

Wash your hands thoroughly to remove any dirt or oil from your hands and fingers. Dry your hands completely.

    • 4

Dunk your glasses into the water and use your fingers to wipe down the glass.

    • 5

Dry the glasses using the lint-free cloth.

    • 6

Apply lens cleaner to the glass, and polish each lens for three to five minutes. Lens cleaner will remove tiny and minor scratches. Lens cleaner can be purchased from any eyeglass store.

    • 7

Use the lens cloth to wipe down and polish the glass.

    • 8

Wipe the glasses once more with the lint-free cloth to ensure that there are no smudge marks, fingerprints or dirt left over.
