How to Order Computer Spectacles

Computer vision syndrome (CVS) occurs when a person spends several hours every day working at a computer screen. The problem originates in the lack of contrast a computer monitor provides between its background and text. Pixels are the many small specks or dots that make up the print we read on a monitor. The pixels are not a solid line like printed text. The most common symptoms of CVS are headaches, eye strain, burning, aching and dry eyes, light sensitivity and blurred vision. Properly fitted glasses can help relieve the problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Make an appointment with an optometrist or ophthalmologist and have your vision examined. Tell the doctor that a prescription for computer glasses is desired.

    • 2

Discuss with the doctor what type of computer glasses are needed. A prescription can be designed to cover mid-range vision (typical computer range) or be combined to cover close, mid and far distances in a single lens. Single vision glasses provide the ability to view the full screen with minimum head movement. Bifocals, trifocals and progressive lenses allow for a much smaller portion of the lens to focus the eye on the computer screen requiring much more head movement and the possibility of neck strain and tension. However, they have the advantage of allowing the eye to view various other distances as well as the computer range.

Allow the doctor to complete the exam and write a prescription for the computer spectacles.

    • 4

Fill the prescription by visiting any reputable dispensing optician. Dispensing opticians do not usually require an appointment, so you can visit any time during business hours to place an order for computer spectacles. Orders are often filled while you wait, but they may take a few days to be completed. Call ahead for details if time frame is important.
