How to Remove Toric Contact Lens Suction

Contact lenses are small round silicone-like devices that are worn to correct vision problems. When inserted into the eye, the cup-like structure of the contact lens creates a suction which keeps the lens attached to the eye. Toric contact lenses have a stronger suction than other lenses because the lens must remain perfectly still in order to correct vision. To remove the toric contact lens, the suction between the eye and the contact lens must be broken.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash your hands thoroughly before removing contact lenses. Bacteria on unwashed hands can lead to eye infections.

    • 2

Position yourself in front of a well-lit mirror so that you can easily see your eye and the contact lens.

    • 3

Place the tip of your index finger on the toric contact lens and move it slightly off the center of the eye. The toric lens is constructed to fit perfectly over the center of the eye. By moving the lens slightly off center, the suction power of the lens is reduced.

    • 4

Gently grasp one side of the lens with the index finger and the other side of the lens with the thumb.

    • 5

Squeeze the thumb and index finger together gently until the suction of the toric lens is broken. The lens should easily come out of the eye.

    • 6

Place the lens into a contact lens container filled with contact lens disinfecting solution.

    • 7

Remove the contact lens form the other eye using the same process.
