Asian Eye Crease Problems

Eyes are shaped in many different ways, for individuals as well as entire ethnic groups. Asians tend to have a particular eyelid shape where there appears to be no crease in the eyelid. Asian eyelids can cause problems, though mostly cosmetic, and many Asians are turning to surgery to create an eyelid with a crease. The procedure is called blepharoplasty.
  1. Tired and Aged Look

    • Many people of Asian descent complain about having a more tired look due to the absence of a crease in their eyelids. The eyelid skin can be hooded and hang over the eye, giving the eye a droopy, tired appearance. When you feel energetic inside, you want your outer appearance to reveal the same thing. But with heavy eyelids, you do not always come across as energetic. You can look sleepy, tired, and unrested. Many Asians want their eyes to appear brighter and more open in order to look as though they are rested and full of energy.

Another chief complaint by those who have no crease in their eyelid is that this makes them appear to be older than they are. It can give you the appearance of not being as youthful as you feel inside. This is because your eyes can be hidden behind the lid and shaded from sight.

If you live with eyelids without a crease, blepharoplasty may be a procedure for you to consider. Blepharoplasty is the procedure of creating an eyelid, or a fold in your skin on your eyelid to give it dimension. Asian eyes typically are missing a superior palpebral fold (or crease). Without the crease, your eyelid can look like a single drape, or curtain. Having the fold or crease creates the appearance of youthfulness and being awake, not tired. The skin, or fold above the eyelashes also gives you room to apply make-up.

    Vision Interference

    • Sometimes Asians may experience problems with vision due to their eyelids. If you have eyelids that lack a crease, you may have trouble seeing due to the eyelids covering part of your field of vision. The eyelid may hang lower, covering part of the eye and blocking your field of vision. If your vision is impaired, surgery may be an option for you, not only for cosmetic reasons, but for medical reasons due to vision impairment.

    Surgery Complications

    • Not only can having hooded eyes have the potential for cosmetic or vision problems, but sometimes there are complications caused by surgery to correct the problem. Despite many good outcomes with the blepharoplasty procedure, there are situations where the procedure can cause other problems. One possible problem is the creation of multiple lids. Sometimes the skin can pucker, leaving the eye with more than one lid. The surgery may also cause problems with being able to close your eye properly. You could also experience excessive swelling or excessive scarring.

Any medical procedure can propose risks. However, if you are not happy with your eyelids, talk to your doctor about your options.
