Underlying Conditions

Diseases like human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)are both examples of underlying conditions that may cause eye infections. These conditions suppress the immune system allowing obscure organisms to take over the eyes.
Pinkeye

Conjunctivitis or pinkeye is a common infection found in children. It is a contagious infection that causes a pink color in and around the eye, itching, swelling and sometimes pain. Conjunctivitis is a bacterial or viral infection.
Sty

A sty is characterized by a white bump that forms on the eyelid. It is a bacterial infection caused by an infected eyelash follicle. Symptoms include swelling, pain and itching.
Keratitis

This is a condition caused by bacterial, viral and fungal infections. Keratitis is the infection of the cornea. Infection sources include the STD herpes virus and infection from a traumatic injury to the eye. Keratitis can cause blindness if left untreated.
Cellulitis

Orbital cellulitis is caused by staphylococcus infections. It enters the eye through an injury or by wiping the eyes with a hand that is infected with the bacteria. Cellulitis is one of the infections that takes advantage of a suppressed immune system.
Fungal Infections

Objects that pierce the eye during a trauma or via infected drops or even contact lenses introduce fungal infections into the eye. Yeast and filamentous fungi are common eye fungal infections. The symptoms are pain, impaired vision, light sensitivity and discharge from the eye.
