Erythromycin Eye Ointment & Instructions for Usage
MayoClinic.com explains that opthalmic erythromycin is an antibiotic ointment applied to infections of the eyes. The ointment, known in the United States by the brand name Romycin, can also be used to prevent certain eye infections in newborn babies; erythromycin eye ointment may also be used in conjunction with other eye medicines depending on the eye infection. To successfully treat an eye infection with erythromycin eye ointment, it is necessary to follow the instructions for usage.-
Preparation for Usage
-
The Mayo Clinic suggests that you prepare by first washing your hands; it is important to keep the applicator free of germs to reduce risk of re-infection. To further create a germ-free environment for successful treatment of eye infection, prevent the applicator tip from touching your eye or any other surface; wipe the tip with a clean tissue when you are finished using it and make sure the container is tightly closed.
Dosing
-
As explained on MayoClinic.com, the dose you need is dependent upon your particular eye infection. Be sure to read the label provided by your doctor; if you have questions about the dose, call your doctor or question your pharmacist. Since different strengths may be prescribed, the dosage also depends on how strong of a treatment you need. The Mayo Clinic provides the following general dosing information: For adults and children, use in the eyes up to six times a day as directed by your doctor; for prevention of neonatal conjunctivitis and ophthalmia neonatorum, use in the eyes once at birth. If you accidentally miss your dose, MayoClinic.com advises that you skip the missed dose and simply resume use if it is almost time to use your erythromycin eye ointment; however, if it is not almost time, go ahead and apply the ointment as soon as possible.
Application
-
First, tilt your head back. Next, press your finger against the skin beneath your eye and pull your lower eyelid away from your eye, leaving a space for the ointment. Squeeze the applicator and place approximately 1/3 of an inch (or the amount directed by your doctor) of erythromycin eye ointment in the space you have created. Let go of your skin and close your eye; keep your eye closed for one to two minutes to ensure that the erythromycin eye ointment comes into contact with the infection.
