Subtract 35 from your age and place a decimal point between the remainder. For example, if you are 45 the remainder is 10 so start with a lens that has a magnification power of 1.0.

Put the glasses on and, if there is a chart available, read the chart with the glasses. If there is no chart available, any reading material held at a distance of 12 to 17 inches will help to determine the proper right magnifying glasses.

If the chart or reading material is still blurry, select the next power of magnification and see if the text or chart is more clear. Repeat this process until the text is not blurry at the lowest magnification.
