How to Remove Protein Buildup From Contact Lenses

Soft and hard contact lenses develop a cloudy film over time. The layer of cloudiness is actually protein and other substances like calcium, and it comes from your tears. The film builds up quickly in some people and slower in others, but eventually all contact lenses require an extra cleaning to get rid of the protein. Knowing a few things in advance makes removing protein buildup easy.

      Wash your hands before handling your lenses. Remove your right lens and place in the palm of your hand.

      Place several drops of daily protein remover on the front and back surface of your lens. Rub the solution gently in a circular motion for 20 seconds on each side of the lens.

      Rinse the lens thoroughly and soak overnight with your rinsing and storing solution.

      Remove protein buildup with a weekly enzymatic cleaner. Clean your lenses with your daily cleaner then place lenses in a weekly overnight enzyme cleaner. Most enzymatic cleaners involve dissolving a tablet in your rinsing solution, but check your specific brand to ensure you are following instructions properly.

      Remove lenses the next morning and rinse lenses thoroughly with your rinsing and storing solution before wearing.
