How to Pick Out Reading Glasses

Reading glasses help with close work, but in addition to being functional, "readers" can be stylish, too. With so many choices available, it is helpful to know what to look for in advance when picking out a pair of eyeglasses for reading.

Try on both plastic and metal frames to see which feels more comfortable. Metal frames usually have nose pads that can be adjusted to fit on your bridge. Plastic frames are usually lighter in weight and come in a variety of colors.

Select a frame that contrasts the shape of your face. If your face is round, look for an angular, square or rectangular shape frame. If your face is angular, look for oval or round curves. If your face is oval, you are able to wear any shape frame.

Decide on the style of lenses. Reading lenses can be made into regular frames or into half-glasses. Lenses in full-size frames have to be removed to see at a distance. Half-glasses let you see over the top of the frames at all times. Full-size frames work well if you do a lot of close work for long periods of time.

Determine how you will use your reading glasses. Most reading glasses are designed for reading at a distance of 14 to 17 inches. It is possible to have a different power, or prescription strength, calculated into your lenses, depending on how you will use them. If your reading glasses will be used for an intermediate range, such as at a computer monitor, or for hobbies like sewing, discuss your needs with your eye doctor or optician to have her determine the right lens power for your needs.

Choose and order more than one pair. When you wear glasses just for reading, having an extra pair is invaluable. Keep the extra set in the car or on your nightstand so that you always have them nearby. Many optical retail stores offer discounts when you order multiple pairs of glasses at the same time.
