How to Have Bifocal Lenses Replaced

Bifocal lenses are used when you need a different prescription for reading and up close work and for seeing far away. When you get a new prescription for glasses, or if your lenses are damaged or you want to get a new style of bifocal, it is possible to replace your bifocals with a new pair. Knowing how to replace your lenses makes the process easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a copy of your written prescription from your eye doctor. By law, he must furnish you with a copy of your prescription after a complete eye exam and before the prescription expires, usually within one or two years.

    • 2

Verify the type of bifocals that you are currently wearing. Bifocals come in different styles, including bifocals with lines, called flat-tops, trifocals with lines, rounded lined bifocals and no-lines, which are also called progressive or invisible bifocals.

    • 3

Decide whether you want to keep the same style that you had previously, or try a different kind of bifocal. Bifocals without lines take some getting used to, but do have the added benefit of being able to read at multiple focal points. Lined bifocals only have two points of vision, far and close.

    • 4

Discuss your bifocal needs with your eye care professional. Opticians are trained to help you select the best type of lenses for your particular situation and needs.

    • 5

Take your frame with you if you will be replacing lenses into your previous frame. Most labs require the actual frame be present when grinding your new bifocals so that they can guarantee the lenses will fit.
