      Try a potato. Apply thin slices of cold potato to your eyelids for a soothing compress. This will reduce swelling and soothe your eyes. Apply potato slices to your closed eyes for 15 to 30 minutes.

      Apply cold compresses. The coldness of the compress, along with the gentle pressure, will reduce the swelling. It also will relieve the accompanying burning and irritation. Make sure you freshen your compresses with cold water periodically. Use soft clean cloths to make your compresses.

      Try tea bags. Tannic acid in tea bags is an effective remedy reduce inflammation and soothe your irritated eyes. Moisten teabags with cold water and place them in the freezer for 2 minutes. Then apply them to your closed eyes for a few minutes.

      Use cucumber slices to reduce swelling and relieve irritation. Apply cucumber slices to your closed eyes for 30 minutes.

      Try Witch Hazel. Soak cotton balls in this astringent and apply them to your closed eyes for 30 minutes. This reduces inflammation and will relieve eye pain and burning. Make sure to squeeze out the excess fluid from the cotton balls before applying them to your eyelids.
