What Are the Causes of Early Cataracts?

The Kellogg Eye Center (KEC) at the University of Michigan describes the condition as "a clouding of the eye's lens." Most cataracts appear in older people, an age-condition of slow growth over time. Early cataracts may appear as a result of poor eye care and medical conditions.
  1. Congenital

    • Congenital cataracts are uncommon, but some infants are born with cataracts on one or both eyes. Some babies develop the condition during the first year, according to KEC.

    Injury

    • Eye injuries sometimes create cataracts. The National Eye Institute (NEI) states that the condition may take years to develop after the original injury.

    Medications

    • Prednisone and other corticosteroids contribute to cataract creation. People who routinely use these medications are more likely to develop the condition.

    Diseases

    • People with diabetes are 10 times more likely to develop cataracts, according to KEC. The American Diabetes Association states that diabetics are 60 percent more likely to develop early cataracts.

    UV Rays

    • Studies reported by the NEI show that protecting the eyes from ultraviolet rays is the best way to prevent cataracts and to slow the development of the condition.

    Smoking

    • Both KEC and the NEI report a link between smoking and cataract development.
