Who Is a Candidate for Restasis?
Also known as cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion, Restasis is a medicated eyedrop used to increase tear production that's been suppressed because of ocular inflammation associated with chronic dry eye, according to the University of Illinois' Eye Digest.-
Function
-
Restasis treats chronic dry eyes, not temporary irritations. Restasis is appropriate if you don't need immediate relief from an uncomfortably irritated eye, as it may take up to six months for maximum effect, according to The Eye Digest.
Considerations
-
Restasis is appropriate for eyeglass wearers. Use Restasis if you primarily wear glasses. According to DailyMed, a publication of the National Institutes of Health, contact lenses should not be worn when applying Restasis to the eyes, but they may be put in 15 minutes after application.
Features
-
Use Restasis if you don't have an eye infection. It does not act as an antibiotic and is less effective as a treatment for active ocular infection, according to DailyMed.
Benefits
-
Restasis is good to use if you plan to have LASIK eye surgery. In a May 2008 study by the University of California, San Diego, Restasis was found to reduce the visual recovery time for LASIK patients, compared with standard eyedrops.
Warning
-
Restasis should be avoided if you are pregnant or nursing. Studies have not shown that it is entirely safe for pregnant or nursing women, says DailyMed.
