How Long Can Vision Improve with LASIK?

LASIK is the most widely used form of laser eye surgery, chosen by more than 85% of laser eye surgery patients in the United States and Europe, according to the Guardian UK's article, "Consumer Test: Laser eye surgery," by Ed Ewing. LASIK eye surgery improves vision permanently.
  1. Treatable Conditions

    • LASIK laser surgery is used to improve vision for people who are nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism.

    Function

    • In order to restore vision to perfect (20/20) or near-perfect, laser surgery must reshape and/or remove tissue of the cornea (the front window of the eye), so that light focuses properly on the eye's retina.

    Procedure

    • WebMD's report, "Eye Health: LASIK Laser Eye Surgery," says that LASIK eye surgery is performed within 10 minutes. LASIK information on WebMD, as well as information on AllAboutVision.com (among many other sources), says that eye laser surgery improves vision immediately after surgery, to last permanently.

    Improved Vision

    • Sources on AllAboutVision.com and WebMD say that the LASIK patient's vision is improved almost immediately upon the completion of surgery, or at least within 24 hours.

    Side Effects

    • Side effects of LASIK subside within a few days, after which the patient can enjoy the benefits of improved vision. Side effects will include eye dryness and irritation, blurred vision, and fluctuating vision, especially at night.

    Lasting Results

    • LASIK surgery can improve vision permanently. Changes to the cornea cannot be undone. If the desired vision is not reached, the patient may have another LASIK procedure performed for further vision improvement.
