Dizziness Condition & Symptoms

"Dizziness" is a common medical term for feelings of faintness, weakness, and lightheaded spells. Although dizziness usually isn't serious, it can be a symptom of serious conditions.
  1. Symptoms

    • Some of the symptoms of dizziness include balance loss, weakness, fatigue, nausea, difficulty concentrating, blurred vision, lightheadedness and faintness.

    Causes

    • Many things can cause dizziness. According to th Mayo Clinic, one's sense of balance is controlled by signals to the brain from the inner ear, the eyes and nerves. A disruption in these signals, such as vertigo, can cause dizziness.

    Effects

    • Dizziness can disrupt daily life, especially if it persists. Spells of dizziness and lightheadedness can cause extreme inability to concentrate, making normal activities difficult or impossible.

    Risks

    • During spells of dizziness, coordination is disrupted, making it easier to fall. This can be especially dangerous if the person is near stairs or things that could hurt him if he fell on them.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Dizziness sometimes is a persistent complication of an underlying condition. To prevent dizzy spells, it is important to find out the cause and avoid activities that trigger dizziness.
