What Are the Treatments for Large Eye Floaters?

Eye floaters are vitreous syneresis or detached posterior vitreous liquids in the eye. Some ophthalmologists believe that floaters fade over time and become less noticeable, especially in the case of minute ones. However, treating large eye floaters can be conducted via two procedures: vitrectomy or laser.
  1. Vitrectomy

    • In this procedure the detached vitreous is surgically removed by making multiple incisions in the eye. This procedure is particularly helpful when there are many fragments present in the eye.

    Laser

    • The newest treatment for removing large eye floaters is the laser, and it boasts a record of effectiveness. The exact treatment for each type of eye floater depends on its position.

    Mid-Vitreous Mass

    • A mid-vitreous detachment can lodge itself in the way of the visual axis, blurring an object. Once treated by laser, eyesight becomes clearer.

    Posterior Vitreous Detachment

    • These vitreous detachments are like bags of strands that are seen in the posterior of the eye. When laser treatment is used on them these detachments are dissolved until they are invisible.

    Vitreous Syneresis

    • These nearly invisible detachments that float around the eye are typically eliminated by laser treatment.
