Eye Infection Disorders

Eye infection disorders can be caused by fungus, viruses or bacteria. There are many types of eye infections which can occur in one eye or both, and in different parts of the eye including eye lids, cornea and optic nerves. Treatment of eye infections varies depending on infection type and symptoms.

Symptoms

• Symptoms of eye infections can include redness, pain, vision problems, swelling, itching and sometimes discharge.

Conjunctivitis

• Conjunctivitis is a common eye infection also known as pink eye. It is caused by viral or bacterial eye infection. Conjunctivitis is very contagious and can be prevented by frequent hand washing.

Stye

• A stye is a common eye infection which blocks oil producing glands near eyelids and lashes. Styes look like small bumps and are normally harmless.

Types

• Other eye infections include trachoma, cellulites, blepharitis, keratitis and corneal ulcer.

Treatment

• Treatment of eye infections depends on the type of infection, but typical treatments include eye drops, creams and antibiotics.
