Causes & Risk Factors of Iritis

Iritis is an inflammation in the middle layer of the eye. This can cause damage to your iris, and may even lead to glaucoma or blindness. It is important to know the causes and risk factors of this condition.

Injury

• An injury that penetrates, burns, or bluntly damages your eye can cause this condition. It is important to wear safety glasses when working around or with objects that can penetrate or burn your eye.

Shingles

• If a breakout of shingles occurs of your face, it can result in iritis, especially if it is near your eyes.

Genetics

• People with a certain genetic code that causes alterations to your immune system function are more prone to developing iritis.

Arthritis

• Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is a cause of iritis in children, and the conditions often coexist.

Inflammation

• An inflammation or swelling in the eye can also lead to iritis. Usually the inflammation starts in the back of the eye before developing into this condition.
