The Effects of Computer Screens on the Eyes
Whether at work or at home, computers have become a large part of our lives. Staring at a screen for hours can cause discomfort to the eyes also known as Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS).-
Symptoms
-
CVS occurs when the eyes are overworked for long periods of time. Many people have reported headaches and eye strain after working on a computer. Some experience blurred vision or even neck and shoulder pain.
Persistence of Problems
-
These are short-term problems and tend to clear up shortly after leaving the computer. There is no evidence that the computer screen can cause long-term or permanent damage to the eye.
Pre-Existing Problems
-
The effects of CVS can linger after the sufferer has left their computer. This can be caused by an existing vision problem. The strain of the screen on already strained vision can prolong the discomfort, but is not linked to any permanent damage.
Visual Challenges of Computers
-
Text viewed on a screen is not as sharp as letters printed on a page. This relatively unclear text makes the eye work harder to focus. Glare on the computer also reduces the contrast making it more difficult to read.
Prevention
-
Give your eyes a rest. Spend a few minutes every hour away from the computer screen. This will allow your eyes to relax from the strain. Try alternating between computer and paper work.
