Common Eye Problems & Treatment
Many people experience eye problems and in greater quantities as they grow older. Vision usually gets worse with age, but there are a few eye problems that are more common than others. Due to commonality, most of these problems are regularly treated by eye doctors (optometrists). If you're experiencing a problem with your vision, go to a doctor immediately because the sooner your eyes are treated, the less permanent damage you'll endure.-
Myopia and Hyperopia
-
Myopia (also known as near-sightedness) and hyperopia (also known as far-sightedness) are the most common eye problems today. Usually, people have either one or the other, but sometimes a person must live with both myopia and hyperopia. Since this is such a common problem, eyeglass and contact lenses are made in mass quantities and at relatively inexpensive prices for people who have myopia or hyperopia. If you think you have one of these defects in your vision, see an eye doctor as soon as possible for a diagnosis. A more expensive treatment option is lasik surgery, a one-time process that corrects your vision permanently.
Astigmatism
-
If there are blurs, spots or smudges in your vision, it's possible that you have astigmatism. Astigmatism is the result of an irregularly curved lens or cornea. There are two different kinds of astigmatism. Irregular astigmatism can only be corrected with contact lenses, not glasses. Regular astigmatism can be corrected with the proper glasses. Refractive surgery may also be performed on eyes with astigmatism, removing the need for lenses or glasses altogether.
Cataracts
-
A cataract is a cloudy obstruction on the lens of the eye. If not treated, cataracts can cause glaucoma or blindness. A common occurrence in elderly people is senile cataracts. Unless cataracts are detected very early, they cannot be treated by wearing glasses or contacts; surgery must be performed to remove them. This is a costly procedure, so remember to go to an eye doctor once a year for a checkup to make sure you'll avoid cataract surgery.
