Symptoms of the Pink Eye Condition
Pink eye is a common problem that occurs on the clear, top layer of the eye called the conjunctiva. It can be caused by a virus, bacteria or allergy and is not normally a serious condition. It usually goes away on its own in one to two weeks.-
Itchiness
-
Itchiness is one of the most common symptoms of pink eye and happens in all three types of conjunctivitis. In the viral and bacterial types, itching can lead to spreading from one eye to the other.
Swelling
-
Swelling is also a common effect in all three types of pink eye.
Discharge
-
Discharge is most common in viral and bacterial conjunctivitis. It is a watery puss that ranges from clear to yellow or greenish. During sleep it can seal the eyes shut. A warm, wet compress will help you reopen your eyes.
Cold-like Symptoms
-
Cold-like symptoms occur with viral conjunctivitis. The symptoms are the same as a head cold as the virus runs its course.
Eye Pain
-
There are two types of eye pain associated with pink eye. General eye pain is bacterial. Photosensitive pain is mostly viral.
