Side Effects of Hyoscine Butylbromide

Hyoscine butylbromide is a medication used to temporary dilate the pupils and numb certain parts of the eye before surgical procedures. The medication works by suppressing the eye's ability to react to certain substances in the body, which in turn prevents the user from feeling pain during the procedure. There are a number of side effects associated with using this drug.
  1. Common Side Effects

    • Common side effects include burning, stinging, and redness at the application site; blurred vision; dry mouth; and inflammation and swelling. While these are considered the most common side effects, they affect only a small amount of users.

    Severe Side Effects

    • Severe side effects include severe allergic reaction, difficulty breathing, tightening of the chest, hives, rash, swelling of the the lips and tongue, eye pain, difficulty urinating, fever, flushing or dryness of the skin, irregular heartbeat and hallucinations. These side effects are very rare and do not affect a large number of users.

    Safety Information

    • Hyoscine butylbromide has been known to cause dizziness and blurred vision in users. Do not operate any type of machinery (including automobiles) while using this medication. This medication may also make your eyes more sensitive to sunlight, so wear sunglasses throughout the course of treatment. This drug must also be used with extreme caution in children as it has not been tested in individuals under age 12.

    Usage

    • Always use this medication exactly as it was prescribed and never in dosages that exceed what has been recommended on the label. The medication is administered as an eye drop and should never be ingested through the nose or mouth. To prevent infection in the eye, never allow the drop applicator to touch any surface, including your eyelid. If you miss a dose of the medication, take it as soon as you remember and never take two doses at the same time.

      If an overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center and head directly to the closest emergency room.

      Hyoscine butybromide is meant for use in the eye only and should never be used recreationally or without the consent of a doctor.
