Common Eye Disorders

Some eye disorders are easily resolved and do not require any long-term treatment. There are some eye disorders, however, that can result in a permanent loss of vision. It is important to recognize the symptoms of a more serious condition. Early detection is often the key to maintaining healthy eyesight.
  1. Cataracts

    • Cataracts affect your vision by clouding the lens of the eye. Cataracts are most common in older people; by age 80, half of all of the people in the United States have had a cataract. The most common symptoms of cataracts are blurry vision, faded colors, glare, double vision and difficulty seeing at night. Wearing sunglasses may help prevent or delay the development of cataracts.

    Retinal disorders

    • Retinal disorders affect your vision and can sometimes cause blindness. Some examples of retinal disorders are retinal detachment, a macular pucker, a macular hole and floaters (dark specks in your field of vision). A retinal detachment is a medical emergency and must be treated immediately.

    Glaucoma

    • Glaucoma is an eye disorder that can cause blindness if left untreated. Glaucoma is an increased pressure in the eye. It is most commonly treated with eye drops, pills or in some cases, surgery. People that are over 60, African Americans over the age of 40 or people with a family history of glaucoma are at an increased risk for the disease. Regular eye check-ups can help detect glaucoma in its early stages.

    Conjunctivitis

    • Conjunctivitis, or pink eye, is most common among children. It may cause swelling, itching, burning and discharge of the eye. It is caused by allergies, a bacterial infection or irritants such as contact lenses. Conjunctivitis does not usually affect vision and is easily cleared up by eye drops or ointment.

    Prevention/Solution

    • To maintain good eye health, you must have eye exams performed on a regular basis. This is key to early detection of common eye disorders and will help to preserve your eyesight.
