Symptoms of Pinkeye

Pink eye, or conjunctivitis, is the redness of the eye and inflammation of the inner eyelid and the white part of the eye called the conjunctiva. This condition has both infectious and noninfectious causes. While pink eye is most common in children, it can affect people of all ages. There are many types of pink eye with varying symptoms.
  1. Viral

    • Virus infection is the primary cause of pink eye. Symptoms associated with viral pink eye include water eye discharge, swollen eyelids and cold-like symptoms. Viral pink eye can also cause pain when looking at bright lights.

    Bacterial

    • Staphylococci and Streptococci are two common bacterial causes of pink eye. Symptoms of bacterial pink eye include eye pain, redness, swelling and eye discharge that is yellow or green in color.

    Chlamydia

    • Chlamydia pink eye is sexually transmitted. This type of pink eye is uncommon in the United States, but does occur more often in Africa and Middle Eastern countries.

    Chemical

    • Chemical pink eye is caused when irritants enter the eyes. These can include smoke, household cleaners, smog, industrial pollutants and foreign objects.

    Allergic

    • This type of pink eye typically causes itchy, swollen and watery eyes. You may also experience allergy-like symptoms such as itchy nose and sneezing.

    Treatment

    • Depending upon the type of pink eye diagnosed, your doctor may prescribe antibiotic ointment or eye drops, over-the-counter decongestant eye drops or even advise you to apply cold, moist washcloths to your eyes.
