Metabolic Syndrome Cure

Metabolic syndrome is a series of heart disease risk factors that increase your chance of getting heart disease, stroke and diabetes. This condition has also been referred to as syndrome X or insulin resistant syndrome. According to Cleveland Clinic, from a national health survey, more than one in five Americans has metabolic syndrome. There are more than 40 percent of the people in their 60's and 70's that are affected with metabolic syndrome.
  1. Diagnosis

    • If you have more than three of the following symptoms you have metabolic syndrome. Some of these symptoms are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high blood sugar, and high triglycerides. Men with waistlines over 40 inches and women whose waistline is over 35 inches is another indication. There is no specific cure for metabolic syndrome, but with changes in lifestyle, weight loss and diet many of these symptoms can be treated successfully according to the American Diabetic Association.

    Weight Management

    • Keeping your weight at a steady and healthy level is one of the most important things you can do to avoid metabolic syndrome. Even moderate weight loss in the range of 5 percent to 10 percent of your body weight can help you restore your body's ability to regulate insulin according to Cleveland Clinic.

    Exercise

    • Walk 30 minutes everyday and you can lower your blood pressure, improve your cholesterol levels and reduce your risk of developing diabetes as is noted on the Cleveland Clinic website. If you feel very ambitious head for the gym where there is a lot of equipment to choose from, and generally a variety of aerobic classes. If you prefer to have your workout at home use an exercise video, or buy a treadmill and free weights.

    Diet

    • Eat a healthy diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables. Select whole grains for bread, pasta and cereal. Use the grains quinoa, barley and millet for variety. Legumes such as lentils, peas and beans make great soups, and are very nutritious when you add vegetables. Reduce your intake of red meat and poultry. Select healthy fats such as flaxseed, olive and canola oil, and raw nuts of any kind are rich in vitamins. All of these suggestions are recommended by Cleveland Clinic to eliminate the many symptoms of metabolic syndrome.
