Honey for Eye Infection

Eye infections are caused by a bacteria, virus or microbiological agent. Eye infections can cause irritation to any part of the eye, the eyelid, cornea or the optic nerves at the back of the eye. Some symptoms that may result include redness, watery eyes, burning, itching or discharge from the eyes. Honey, an antimicrobial, can help clear the eye of infection as a natural remedy.
  1. Honey for Eye Infection

    • Honey, which has antibacterial properties and acts as a humectant, will clear the eye of infection and provide soothing relief. Use raw, unpasteurized honey for additional antibiotic properties. Honey can be used in several ways for eye infection.

For an eye infection that has spread to the eyelid, mix equal parts honey with distilled or boiled water to make a solution. Use a cotton ball and apply on the eye. For more effectiveness, leave the soaked cotton ball on the eye, and do not reuse to prevent spreading of infection. The same solution can be used as eyedrops. Keep the eye open and squeeze two or three drops in the eye. The mixture can also be used to rinse the eye two or three times daily until infection clears.

Honey can also be applied directly to the eye without diluting it. Place one or two drops of honey directly on your eyes. The honey will collect dirt or discharge and be eliminated through natural tearing.

Honey can also be used in combination with eyebright flowers and leaves. Boil 3/4 pint water with the eyebright flowers and add 3 Tbsp honey until dissolved. Soak cotton ball or clean cloth in the mixture and place on eye for 15 to 20 minutes. The solution can also be used as an eyewash.

    Home Remedy for Conjunctivitis

    • Pinkeye (conjunctivitis) is when the transparent lining of the eyelid becomes inflamed or infected and the white areas turn red or "pink." Pinkeye could also occur during an inflammation of the cornea, which could affect vision. Because pinkeye is contagious, early treatment is recommended to prevent spreading infection to others, so consult a doctor in addition to trying home remedies.

Home remedies for pinkeye include applying warm compresses to the eyes using a soft cloth. But when pinkeye is caused by allergies, avoid rubbing your eyes to prevent the release of more histamines, and apply cool compresses on your eyes.
