How to Pass the Color Blindness Test

Color blindness refers to a condition in which you cannot see, or have difficulty seeing, particular colors. A medical professional can detect the condition using a color blindness test. The test consists of a series of circles containing colored dots in a diagnostic pattern. The colors of the dots in the circle form numbers, letters or shapes. The image formed in the circle appears one way to those who are not color blind and a different way to those who are color blind. If you are color blind, you will see only limited shapes and colors. However, if you are not color blind, you might still have difficulty identifying the shapes and patterns under certain conditions. If you are not color blind you can pass the test by ensuring that you take the test under optimal conditions.

Instructions

    • 1

View the diagnostic test pattern on printed cards rather than on a computer screen. Different computer display screens show colors with different levels of intensity and accuracy.

    • 2

View from the optimal distance. The test requires that you find patterns in a field of dots and being too close or too far reduces the perceived clarity of the dots. The optimal distance is 2 1/2 feet from the card.

    • 3

View in optimal lighting. Standard fluorescent lighting or daylight is optimal. Color-altered light, such as light filtered through a colored lamp cover, can impair your ability to distinguish the colors of the dots.

    • 4

View from the optimal angle. Your eyes should be level with the center of the circle of dots and the circle should be directly in front of you.

    • 5

Examine each circle carefully. The numbers or letters embedded in the circle of dots might not be apparent at first glance. Time is not a factor measured by the test, so take your time.
