Prevention of Cataracts

Nutrition
-
According to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, it is possible to help prevent the development of cataracts by eating a diet that is high in vegetables and fruits. These foods contain high amounts of antioxidants, which destroy free radicals. Free radicals damage cells and can contribute to the formation of cataracts. It may also be helpful to consume omega-3 fatty acids, which can help reduce the risk of cataracts. Sources include fish, such as salmon and mackerel, as well as ground flaxseed.
Supplements
-
In addition to eating a consistently healthy diet, use supplements in your daily regimen to support your vision health. Lutein and zeaxanthin can both help prevent damage to the eyes, especially from UV exposure, reducing the risk of developing cataracts. Natural sources include eggs, spinach and kale, but it may be a good idea to take a supplement to ensure that your body has sufficient amounts of these phytochemicals. Vitamin C, an antioxidant, can also help prevent eye damage. Taurine, vitamin E and calcium may also help. Curcumin, the active ingredient in the spice turmeric, has significant antioxidant activity that promotes eye health. However, it may not be as effective for this purpose in large doses, such as that provided by a supplement. Your best bet is to sprinkle some turmeric in dishes such as chili and soup.
Environment
-
Sunlight, specifically UV rays, may increase your chances of developing cataracts. Wear sunglasses if you are going to be outside longer than a few minutes. Select a pair of sunglasses that protects against both UVA and UVB exposure. Another factor that contributes to cataract development is smoking. If you do smoke, quitting will help protect your eyes. Excessive intake of alcohol can also be a contributing factor, so reducing your alcohol consumption is also a smart step toward preventing cataracts.
