1
NOTICE ANY HEADACHES OR DIFFICULTY WITH VISION.
Hypertensive retinopathy can be caused by hypertension when the blood vessels in the retinal area of the eye become damaged and the eyes have trouble focusing as a result. Also pay attention to any recurring experiences with headaches. Simply taking ibuprofen to reduce pain and swelling will only mask the real problem.

2
DETERMINE IF YOU HAVE HYPERTENSION.
If you have already been diagnosed with hypertension then skip to step three. If not, go to your primary doctor and for a check up. If diagnosed you will receive instructions to reduce hypertension. This is key in treating your eye problems as well.

3
SEE AN OPTOMETRIST OR EYE CARE PROFESSIONAL.
Ask your doctor to refer you to a vision specialist to determine if you also have hypertensive retinopathy. The doctor will use a combination dye in the eye and light to determine what extent of damage has already occurred.
