Remedies for Eye Bags

Bags that acclimate under the eye often present an unsightly appearance that makes people appear tired and older than they may be. Although they're partially due to genetics, under-eye bags can get some relief with remedies from home, a doctor and over-the-counter.
  1. Cucumbers

    • A trusted (and simple) remedy for eye bags is to apply cucumbers to the infected area. Cucumbers contain an abundance of water, which is renowned for its healing properties and ability to calm the skin. When applying to under-eye bags, cucumbers should be sliced very thin and placed in cold water to be placed under the eye for at least 10 minutes. This will instantly "wake up" the area and get rid of dark circles and puffiness.

    Healthy Diet

    • The old mantra of "you are what you eat" couldn't be accurate when speaking about under-eye bags. The body responds to the food it is given, and with under-eye bags, a diet rich in salt and with little water can make the area appear discolored and puffy. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables is beneficial to the eye area, and kiwis and yogurt in particular are renowned for their ability eliminate bags due to the high concentration of vitamin C and D.

    Sleep

    • Insufficient sleep does not only affect an individual's ability to function, but can have significant effects on one's appearance, including on under-eye bags. Getting adequate sleep (generally 7 to 9 hours for adults) is beneficial for under-eye bags. Sleep allows for normal blood and oxygen to flow through the under-eye area, making the skin look refreshed and revitalized.

    Doctor Remedies

    • Some people go to a doctor for a surgical procedure to cure their under-eye bags. Depending on the severity of the bags, a doctor may decide that an individual needs a blepharoplasty or fillers. A blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat under the eyes with lasers. This type of procedure is recommended for people with severe bags and generally is known for its fast healing and quick results.

A filler works by injecting fat to the under-eye area such as collagen, which can enhance volume and smoothness to the infected area. These injections are known to be the most natural and less invasive than surgery, but individuals may have to undergo several procedures before results are seen.

    Creams

    • There are numerous over-the-counter creams that are touted for their ability to cure under-eye bags. These products are generally massaged under the eye at night and work by making the skin tighter and increasing the production of collagen to the infected area. When embarking on an over-the-counter skin care regime it is important to remember to seek products that are touted as having anti-aging properties. Creams should also be placed in the refrigerator for additional cooling and healing properties.
