The Side Effects of Lumigan Eye Drops

Whether you have eye pressure due to glaucoma or another similar eye affliction, Lumigan eye drops can help. Unfortunately, there are some side effects of Lumigan eye drops, although some people like the changes that they see while using this medication. Still, some side effects can be severe.
  1. What is Lumigan?

    • Lumigan is an eye drop solution that is used to help patients with glaucoma. Glaucoma is an eye condition that causes pressure inside the eye. Lumigan helps relieve that pressure. While most patients who use this medication have glaucoma, there are some who use it for other eye pressure issues.

Changes in Eye Color and Lashes

    • The most common side effect of Lumigan is a change in the patient's eye color. The eye drop solution will turn the eyes a progressive shade of brown, although this is gradual and noticed only after months or years. This can be a permanent change even after stopping the use of Lumigan. This medication also affects the eyelids and lashes, causing them to become thicker. Some patients see these as positive side effects.

    Eye Infections

    • With improper use of the eye drop applicator, Lumigan can cause eye infections. This happens when the tip of the applicator touches any surface including hands or eyes. Keep the cap secured at all times, and avoid touching the applicator tip to your eye when using Lumigan eye drops. This will help prevent an eye infection.

    Eye Pain

    • Some patients that use Lumigan eye drops have experienced eye pain as a side effect. These effects range from mild to severe and include redness, itching and swelling of the area. Patients may also experience stinging and burning during the application of the eye drops, as well as an oozing or discharge from the eye. Consult a doctor if side effects become severe.

    Dizziness and Nausea

    • In rare cases, some people using Lumigan eye drops have experienced dizziness and nausea. These side effects can be persistent and last through the use of the eye drops. Although the dizziness is often light, patients should consult a doctor if it interferes with everyday life. If bad enough, a different medication may be prescribed.
