Definition of Toric Contact Lenses

Astigmatism is an optical condition of the eye in which the optics of the eye cannot focus the sharp points of an object onto the retina. Depending on the type of astigmatism, it may not be correctable with standard contacts, but may be correctable using toric contact lenses.
  1. Definition of Astigmatism

    • Astigmatism is caused by an irregular curve in the cornea, or lens, of the eye. Toric curvature resembles the shape of an American football.

    Toric Contact Lenses Defined

    • Toric contact lenses are curved on two axes to correct for the irregular curvature of the cornea. Toric lenses are weighted on the bottom to ensure that they sit properly on the eye.

    Soft Toric Contact Lenses

    • Soft contact toric lenses are now available in a complete range of lens types, including extended wear, disposable, daily disposable and frequent replacement lenses. Colored soft toric lenses are also available.

    Hard Toric Contact Lenses

    • Hard toric contact lenses have been in use for many years. Hard lenses can correct more extreme astigmatism. Modern hard toric lenses are gas permeable, allowing oxygen and other required gasses to reach the cornea.

Other Options for the Correction of Astigmatism

    • Astigmatism can also be corrected by traditional eyeglasses and Lasik surgery.
