Break the cigarette habit. Everyone knows that smoking is bad for the health. This habit increases the risk of lung cancer, heart disease and other respiratory problems. Smoking also increases the odds of glaucoma, cataracts, dry eyes and macular degeneration disease.

Get an eye examination. If caught early, vision problems are often treatable. Of course, this requires making an annual appointment with an optometrist. Using sophisticated machines, eye doctors exam the eyes for abnormalities, and they’re usually able to identify vision problems in their early stage.

Eat blueberries. Foods that contain antioxidants offer an array of health benefits. This berry reduces the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, which can lead to complete blindness.

Keep the eyes moist. Although dry eye disease doesn’t sound serious, this condition can lead to corneal ulcers or abrasions. Chronic dry eye sufferers and contact lens wearers should apply re-wetting drops throughout the day, and blink frequently.

Take a multivitamin. Supplements such as fish oil, vitamin C and zinc reduce the chances of developing serious vision problems. Unfortunately, some people don’t consume the recommended daily dose of vitamins and essential nutrients. To improve eyesight and prevent age-related vision disorders, take vitamin supplements daily.

Exercise three to four times a week. A regular workout routine can decrease intraocular pressure, or fluid pressure around the eyes. Increased pressure can indicate glaucoma or optic nerve damage.
