How to Treat a Severe Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a common vision disorder in which the front part of the eyeball is abnormally-shaped in a way that leads to blurred vision, especially when looking at something up close or off in the distance. Most people who are near-sighted have some degree of astigmatism. Sometimes astigmatism can be severe and require something more than just glasses or contact lenses.

Instructions

    • 1

Find an optician or ophthalmologist that you trust. You will need a professional to examine the degree of your astigmatism and work with you on corrective solutions.

    • 2

Experiment with glasses and contact lenses. In the vast majority of cases, some type of glasses or contact lenses will be able to correct most degrees of astigmatism.

    • 3

If you have tried soft contact lenses (or Torics) and your astigmatism is still severe, try rigid gas permeable contact lenses or glasses.

    • 4

Wear your eyeglasses or contact lenses regularly. Your astigmatism can get worse if you try to go without correcting your vision.

    • 5

Talk to your doctor about the variety of surgical options for correcting severe astigmatism if glasses or contacts simply do not work for you. Your options include different types of refractive or laser surgery to reshape your eye, but the correct treatment varies by the individual situation.
