How to Use Vision Therapy

Vision problems can keep children from fulfilling their academic and scholastic potential. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to correct an issue. However, you also may improve your child's eyesight with vision therapy. This treatment requires constant stimulation of the least dominant eye. Vision is learned just like walking as therapy balances both sides of the body. Vision therapy focuses on eye alignment, eye focusing ability, eye teaming, visual processing and eye movements.

Instructions

    • 1

Take your child to a behavioral optometrist for a complete examination. Getting diagnosed by a specialist is imperative to making sure vision therapy is what you need.

    • 2

Work out a vision therapy program with the optometrist, making it something that fits your schedule at home.

    • 3

Schedule your vision therapy at least twice a week. Arrange with your optometrist for exercises like tracking with a filter on the dominant eye, inserting pegs into a rotating board, threading yarn though a spool and creating "snow angels" on the floor. Even jumping on a trampoline with a filter over the dominant eye helps.

Keep track of your vision therapy at home. Make notes for the behavioral optometrist, especially if you notice improvements or changes.
