Eyewash What to Know
Eyewash is a liquid solution used to rinse the eyes in case of contamination or irritation. It can be used to remove foreign objects, such as dust, dirt, or chemicals, from the eye, or to provide relief from eye irritation caused by allergies, inflammation, or other conditions.
Types of Eyewash
There are two main types of eyewash:
* Saline eyewash: Saline eyewash is made with sterile water and salt (sodium chloride). It is the most common type of eyewash and is generally safe for use by anyone, including people who wear contact lenses.
* Buffered eyewash: Buffered eyewash is made with sterile water, salt, and a buffer, such as borate or phosphate. Buffered eyewash is more effective at neutralizing acids and bases than saline eyewash, and it may be preferred for use in certain situations, such as when there is a risk of chemical exposure.
When to Use Eyewash
Eyewash should be used any time the eyes are contaminated or irritated. Some common situations when eyewash may be needed include:
* Getting something in the eye, such as dust, dirt, or chemicals
* Having an allergic reaction
* Experiencing eye inflammation
* Having a stye or other eye infection
* Wearing contact lenses that have become irritated
How to Use Eyewash
To use eyewash, follow these steps:
1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. This will help to prevent the spread of infection.
2. Tilt your head back and hold your eye open.
3. Direct the stream of eyewash into your eye from a distance of about 4 inches.
4. Rinse your eye for at least 15 seconds.
5. Gently pat your eye dry with a clean cloth or tissue.
Precautions
When using eyewash, it is important to take the following precautions:
* Do not use eyewash that is expired. Expired eyewash may not be effective and could potentially cause infection.
* Do not touch the dropper to your eye. This could contaminate the dropper and spread infection.
* Discard the eyewash container after use. This will help to prevent the spread of infection.
* If your eye pain does not improve after using eyewash, see your doctor. You may have a more serious eye condition that requires treatment.
