Eye colour, also known as iris colour, is a polygenic phenotypic character determined by:

- Concentration and distribution of melanin content within the iris' sphincter muscle and the epithelium covering the front surface of the iris

- Variable density of the stroma of the iris

- Anterior limiting layer at the front part of the iris

- Epithelial cell layer on the back surface of the iris

- Dilatation of blood vessels in the iris
