How to Fix Scratches on Photo Gray Eyeglasses

Photochromic lenses, also referred to as transition lenses, darken to a shade of gray or brown when exposed to ultraviolet rays in sunlight. When they are away from the light, the lenses retain their clear appearance. The first mass-produced photochromic lenses were called PhotoGray and PhotoBrown, and were manufactured by Corning Inc. of Corning, New York. These lenses are still in production and worn by those who prefer the versatility of transition eyeglasses. Scratches on PhotoGray lenses are quickly repaired.

Instructions

    • 1

Buff out the scratches using a nail buffer. Use a gentle circular motion and apply slight pressure to the nail buffer to remove the scratches without causing further damage to the lens.

    • 2

Dampen a lens cloth with a dab of baby oil. Rub the baby oil onto the buffed area and polish the lens using a rapid circular motion.

    • 3

Wipe the baby oil away with a dry lens cloth to check your progress. If the scratches are still visible, repeat the process until they begin to fade.

    • 4

Saturate a clean lens cloth with rubbing alcohol. Wipe the lens completely clean of baby oil.

    • 5

Dry the lens thoroughly and return your PhotoGray eyeglasses to the storage case.
