Why do you get stys in your eyes?

A stye, medically known as a hordeolum, is a common eye infection that occurs when a gland at the base of the eyelash becomes infected with bacteria, leading to inflammation and the formation of a small, painful bump on the eyelid. The primary cause of styes is a bacterial infection, often by the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus.

Factors that increase the risk of developing styes include:

1. Poor Hygiene Practices: Not washing hands frequently or touching the eyes with unwashed hands can introduce bacteria into the eye area, increasing the risk of infection.

2. Blocked Oil Glands: The glands that produce oil to lubricate the eyelashes (meibomian glands) can become clogged, creating a favorable environment for bacterial growth and leading to styes.

3. Underlying Skin Conditions: Certain skin conditions like rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, and eczema can increase the risk of stye development due to inflammation and changes in the skin's barrier.

4. Blepharitis: Chronic inflammation of the eyelid margin (blepharitis) can cause stye formation due to associated bacterial infection.

5. Contact Lens Use: Wearing contact lenses, especially without proper hygiene and lens care, can increase the risk of introducing bacteria into the eyes and causing styes.

6. Weakened Immune System: Individuals with compromised immunity or certain medical conditions have a higher susceptibility to bacterial infections, including styes.

7. Hormonal Factors: Hormonal changes during puberty, menstruation, or pregnancy can contribute to the development of styes.

8. Stye Recurrence: People who have experienced styes in the past are more prone to future occurrences due to the presence of bacteria in the eye area.

It's important to maintain good eye hygiene, avoid touching the eyes with unwashed hands, and seek medical attention if styes persist or cause significant discomfort. Early treatment and proper hygiene can help prevent the spread of infection and promote healing.
