What do people with Achondroplasia look like?
Achondroplasia is a genetic condition that causes disproportionate dwarfism. People with achondroplasia have an average adult height of around 4 feet and a normal-sized trunk. Their limbs are short, especially the arms and legs, and their heads are typically larger than average. Other physical features of achondroplasia include:
* A prominent forehead
* A flattened bridge of the nose
* Widely spaced eyes
* A broad, short neck
* A curved spine
* Short fingers and toes
* Hyperextensibility of the joints
People with achondroplasia usually have a normal lifespan and intelligence. They may experience some health problems, such as sleep apnea, bowed legs, and hydrocephalus (a buildup of fluid in the brain). Most people with achondroplasia are able to live full and active lives.
