What is systane eyedrops for?
Systane (polyethylene glycol 400) is an artificial tear that is used to temporarily relieve burning, irritation, and discomfort due to dryness of the eye. It may also be used to protect the cornea from further damage in conditions such as keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye syndrome) and blepharitis.
Systane is a sterile, non-preserved solution that contains polyethylene glycol 400, propylene glycol, hydroxypropyl guar, sorbitol, and purified water. It is free of preservatives, phosphates, and silicone.
Systane is typically instilled into the affected eye(s) as needed, usually one to two drops two to four times daily, or as directed by a doctor. The dosage may vary depending on the severity of the condition being treated.
Do not use Systane if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the medication.
Systane may cause temporary stinging or burning upon application. If these effects persist or worsen, stop using Systane and contact your doctor.
Other potential side effects of Systane include:
* Headache
* Dizziness
* Blurred vision
* Watery eyes
* Increased sensitivity to light
If you experience any of these side effects, talk to your doctor.
