How to Tint Pairs of Eyeglasses

Tinted eyeglasses have become a popular trend. To get tinted lenses, a professional Optometrist must remove the current prescription lenses and insert tinted glass into the frame. However, this process can be costly and the results may not be a style you like. Eyeglasses can be easily tinted at home using an all-purpose dye, such as Rit Brand All-Purpose Dye. It's best to practice on an old pair of lenses to ensure you prefer the look and feel of tinted lenses, before you permanently dye a favorite pair.

Pour two quarts of water into a medium-size saucepan. On low-heat, bring the water to a simmer.

    • 2

Stir in one ounce of Rit Brand All-Purpose Dye. Combine the mixture with five drops of vinegar. Continue stirring on low-heat for five minutes.

    • 3

Remove the lenses from the eyeglass frame. Carefully drop the lenses into the saucepan and allow them to sit for 10 minutes.

    • 4

Check the lenses every several minutes after the initial 10. Remove the lenses when they are the tinted your preferred color. The longer the lenses sit in the saucepan, the darker they will become.

Place the tinted lenses on a paper towel to dry. When dried and cooled, rinse the lenses to remove any excess dye.
