How to Protect Glass Eyeglass Lenses

Many people with poor eyesight or other vision disorders prefer eyeglasses over contact lenses for their ease of use and portability. However, everyday wear and tear can cause buildup of dirt and oil, scratching or distortion of the lenses and frames. Replacing a pair of prescription lenses can be expensive and inconvenient. Protect your investment, and your eyesight, by storing your glasses appropriately and performing regular cleaning.

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse your lenses under a cool tap prior to more intensive cleaning. Small particles of dirt may cause scratching if the lenses are not pre-rinsed.

    • 2

Moisten a microfiber cloth with a lens cleaning solution. Wipe the front and back of each lens using a gentle side to side motion.

    • 3

Handle your glasses only by the frames and ear bands when removing them. If you need to rest your glasses on a tabletop, fold the ear bands closed and rest them so that the lenses face upward.

    • 4

Store your glasses in a hard case rather than a soft one made of fabric or leather. Never place your glasses in a purse, backpack or glove compartment without casing them.

    • 5

Buff out light scratches using a lens repair kit. These inexpensive kits are available at most pharmacies or your optician's office.
