How to Get Rid of Green in Eyeglass Lenses
There are two ways to get rid of green in your eyeglass lenses, and both involve using a tinting unit -- a machine in an optical lab or office that dyes lenses and removes color. Green tint is made from a mixture of the base colors blue and yellow. You can add other colors to a green-tinted lens or soak the lens in a special bleaching solution to take all of the color out. Both processes are fairly simple but require some practice, trial and error and special equipment.Things You'll Need
- Soft towel
- Tinting machine
- Lens holder
- Neutralizer
- Tints
Instructions

Remove All the Color
-
1
Turn the tinting unit on and set the temperature to between 190 and 200 degrees Fahrenheit, or whatever temperature is recommended by the manufacturer of the unit. Remove the lenses from the frame. Wash and dry the lenses with a lint-free towel.
-
2
Place the lenses in the lens holder.
-
3
Immerse the lenses into the bleaching -- or neutralizer solution -- tank of the tinting unit. Let the lenses soak for at least 15 minutes. Some lenses take longer to remove the color, depending on the age and coatings on the lenses.
-
4
Check the lenses every 15 minutes until they are clear. Occasionally the green color will not completely come out of lenses. Soaking in neutralizer will not harm the lenses, so you can leave them in the dye unit for a long time. Most lenses will lighten as much as possible within a few hours.
Remove the Green Shade from the Coloring of the Lens
-
5
Turn the tinting unit on and set the temperature to between 190 and 200 degrees Fahrenheit, or whatever temperature is recommended by the manufacturer of the unit. Remove the lenses from the frame. Wash and dry the lenses with a lint-free towel.
-
6
Place the lenses in the lens holder.
-
7
Lower the lenses into the blue dye well and allow them to sit for 15 to 30 seconds. Remove, rinse off and dry. Place the lenses back in the holder. During this process you will reduce the amount of green in the lens while keeping the other tinted shade. For example, a gray sunglasses lens may have some green in it. You reduce the green by adding blue and red dye.
-
8
Soak the lenses in the red dye well for 15 to 30 seconds. Rinse, dry and check the tint.
-
9
Repeat the process of dipping the lenses in the blue dye, then the red, until the green is removed and the desired color is achieved.
