Retinal Hole Postoperative Directions

Caused by trauma to the eye, aging, or underlying disorders of the eye, a macular hole requires immediate treatment to preserve as much of your eyesight as possible. The surgery required to repair a macular hole is called a vitrectomy, and it is imperative that you follow all of your doctor's instructions regarding recovery from this surgery to avoid complications. Understanding the recovery process beforehand increases the likelihood of a successful and therapeutic outcome.

Instructions

Follow your doctor's instructions regarding the protective eye patch required during the immediate postoperative period. You will need to wear the patch until the anesthesia used for the surgery wears off, and you begin blinking normally.

    • 2

Place antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops in the affected eye as directed by your eye doctor. These drops will help with redness and pain relief. They will also minimize your likelihood of developing a post-surgery infection.

    • 3

Place a protective eye shield over the affected eye before sleeping for the first seven days following your operation. You should also wear the shield while showering for the first three days after surgery.

    • 4

Take over-the-counter pain relief medications, such as acetaminophen, as directed by your doctor to manage any post-surgery pain. Frozen compresses, placed gently over your affected eye, are also effective to minimize swelling and pain.

    • 5

Maintain a head-down position at all times. Follow your doctor's instructions regarding how long this is required. Generally, however, this position is necessary for 10 days to two weeks following a vitrectomy. Although it is challenging, maintaining this position is imperative for optimal surgical outcome.
