How to Adjust Plastic Frames for Glasses

Plastic eyeglass frames are fashionable and lightweight, but they tend to come out of shape easily, especially if you take them on and off a lot. The two most common problems with plastic eyeglass frames are the plastic becoming misshapen and the screws in the frame becoming loose. Both problems are easily fixed with simple tools and a little patience.

Instructions

  1. Tightening the Screws

    • 1

Cover the lenses with a small towel or washcloth to prevent scratching them.

    • 2

Close the temples (the parts of the frame that sit over your ears) so the frame is folded.

    • 3

Position the frame so the outside edge of one temple rests on the edge of a counter or other sturdy surface. Tighten the screw that holds the temple onto the front of the frame. Repeat on the other side.

    Adjusting the Frame

    • 4

Fill a bowl with warm water. The water should be warm to the touch, but not hot.

    • 5

Place your glasses in the warm water for about a minute.

    • 6

Remove the glasses. Hold the glasses with both hands so the front of the lenses are facing you and the temples are in the open position. Very gently bend the front of the frame to curve it slightly toward the temples. Plastic frames tend to flatten out and need to be slightly rebent to match the curve of your face. Do this very gently to avoid popping out the lenses.

    • 7

Put the glasses back in the water and allow them to soak for another minute. Gently bend each temple at the spot where it fits over your ear, just a few millimeters, to help hold the frame up on your face. This adjustment is beneficial if your glasses are frequently sliding down your nose.
