How to Switch From Progressive to Trifocal Lenses

As your vision changes, so does the type of glasses you need. If you find yourself having trouble reading, driving or simply seeing through your progressive lenses, lenses that change gradually from top to bottom, it may be time for a switch. Your doctor may recommend trifocal lenses, lenses that have three distinct areas of viewing. Regardless of what type of lens you feel you need, always listen to the recommendations of your doctor and discuss thoroughly your concerns about your vision.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit your doctor, bringing your current progressive lens glasses with you. You will need your original glasses for some of the tests, including the visual acuity test where you are asked to accurately read letters of varying sizes.

    • 2

Discuss with your doctor your desire to switch from progressive to trifocal lenses. Come prepared with an explanation about the vision issues you have been having and how you think trifocal lenses might be a better choice than progressive lenses.

    • 3

If your doctor finds you need trifocal glasses, then select and purchase your new trifocal glasses. Most offices will offer you a variety of lens options such as scratch resistant or lightweight; choose the lens that best fits your lifestyle. When selecting your frames, ask if there are any restrictions due to the trifocal lenses.

    • 4

Make sure the fit of the new glasses is correct before leaving the office. Have the doctor check that the arms rest properly on your ears and that the nose bridge settles in the correct location.

    • 5

Wear your new glasses as prescribed. Do not switch back and forth between your new trifocal glasses and your old progressive glasses, as this may make the transition longer and more difficult.
