How to Make Eyeglasses Fit Properly

Your eyeglasses are both a costly and important investment, so it is essential that they fit properly. Glasses need to hug your head and nose firmly, but not too tightly, to work their best. If you have the time, your eye care professional can help fit your glasses to your face in a few minutes. This service is usually free, however, you can also tune up your eyeglasses at home by using an eyeglass repair kit.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on your glasses and look at yourself in the mirror. Your glasses should be sitting level across your nose, and the earpieces should be in constant contact with your ears.

    • 2

Evaluate the way the glasses feel. Determine if there is too much pressure, discomfort or tightness at the nose or temples. Alternatively, decide if these areas feel too loose or unstable.

    • 3

Remove the glasses and view the nosepieces through your magnifying glass. There will be a single screw holding each of the nosepieces in place.

    • 4

Place the tip of the small screwdriver from the repair kit into the screw head and tighten or loosen based upon your evaluations from Steps 1 and 2.

    • 5

Turn the screw one revolution, then repeat on the other side. Do the same on each side so that your glasses are symmetrical.

    • 6

Put the glasses on after you have turned the screws once. Look at yourself in the mirror to determine if the adjustments were sufficient. Repeat if necessary.

    • 7

Repeat Steps 4 to 6 for the temple hinge. Again, there is a single screw located on either side arm. Tighten or loosen as required and view after each adjustment until you have achieved level, comfortable frames.

    • 8

Adjust your earpieces by gently bending them. Place your thumb along the inner curve of the earpiece, then press down gently on the length of the plastic. This will help to subtly shape the earpiece to the desired curve.
