Why do many people with Down syndrome look somewhat alike?

Many people with Down syndrome look somewhat alike because they share a number of physical features. These include:

* A broad or round face

* An upward slant to the eyes

* Epicanthal folds, which are skin folds that cover the inner corner of the eye

* A broad, flat nasal bridge

* An open mouth with a large tongue

* Short stature

* Hypotonia, or low muscle tone

* Brachycephaly, or a shortened head

* Clinodactyly, or a curved pinky finger

These physical features are caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21, which is present in all people with Down syndrome. This extra chromosome disrupts the normal development of the body and can lead to a number of health problems, including intellectual disabilities, heart defects, and thyroid problems.

While people with Down syndrome share some physical similarities, it is important to remember that they are all unique individuals with their own personalities, strengths, and weaknesses.
